Getting Kids Involved in Summer Energy Savings

Energy Saving

Saving energy can be hard in the southern summer heat, especially when you have kids in your house. Get your kids involved in saving energy by challenging them to follow these five simple guidelines. You can save both energy and money while having some fun at the same time!

1. Bike to the pool, playground or friend’s house

Why hop in the car when the pool and playground are around the block? Not only does walking or biking save energy and fuel, the exercise has physical benefits like increased energy, elevated mood and a healthier heart. Get your kids outside and using their energy rather than letting your car burn gas.

2. Play outdoors rather than watching TV or playing on electronic devices

Help kids start a lemonade stand, play on the swings or create a chalk masterpiece on the driveway. The kids will be having a blast and not even realize they are saving energy by not using electronic devices.

3. Cool off in the pool

After a long day of outdoor activities, kids will be ready to cool off. Instead of cranking up the air conditioning, have them take a dip in the pool. Don’t have access to a pool? Let kids run through the sprinkler for 15 minutes.

4. Take short, cool showers

Encourage kids to take short cool showers in the nighttime. It will be refreshing after a long hot day. Challenge kids to compete for the shortest shower to help save on both water and energy.

5. Turn off the lights

Keeping lights on in the summer not only burns energy but also raises the temperature inside your home. Encourage your kids to make a habit of turning off the lights when they leave a room to save money and keep the house cool.
