Methodology
We analyzed Google search volume data from March 2025 to February 2026 to identify where Americans are most anxious about their electricity bills. Our analysis examined 330 bill-related search terms across all 50 states and the 50 largest U.S. cities, covering everything from “why is my electric bill so high” to “LIHEAP application” to “solar panel cost.”
We grouped these searches into six behavioral themes, including financial distress, cost-cutting, confusion and shock, and rate awareness, to reveal not just where bill anxiety is highest but how people are reacting when a bill feels unexpectedly high. States and cities were ranked on a per capita basis using U.S. Census population estimates to highlight where electricity cost concern is most concentrated relative to population size.
