Methodology
For this study, we leveraged World Weather Online’s API to collect daily and hourly weather data from April 2023 to March 2024 across 159 cities around the world. In particular, we collected each city’s daily cloud cover percentage, visibility in miles, humidity percentage, and sunset timings and consolidated the data into monthly averages. To determine the sunset score for each city, we analyzed three variables with the following weights:
- Cloud cover: 50 points
- Optimal sunset viewing occurs when cloud cover is at 50%.
- Humidity percentage: 25 points
- Optimal sunset viewing occurs when humidity is minimal.
- Visibility in miles: 25 points
- Optimal sunset viewing occurs when visibility is as far as possible.
