The Tastiest Texas Cities for Dining on a Dime

Dining out can be a luxury or a necessity, but for many Texans, it’s a regular part of life, even when money is tight. To find out which Texas cities offer the best bang for your buck when eating out, we analyzed Yelp restaurant data across six popular cuisines and surveyed 425 Texans about their dining habits. By focusing on low-cost, high-rated restaurants, this study highlights where affordable, quality meals are easiest to find, and where they’re hardest to come by.

Key Takeaways

  • Sugar Land is the best city in Texas for dining on a budget, ranking first overall thanks to strong per-capita availability of affordable restaurants across multiple cuisines.
  • Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio rank among the worst Texas cities for dining on a budget.
  • Sugar Land, Mesquite, and New Braunfels rank as the top 3 Texas cities for affordable BBQ restaurants.
  • Texans report spending an average of $192 per month dining out.
  • 1 in 5 Texans has cut grocery spending to eat out.

Where Dining Dollars Go Further

Even with rising food costs, some places make it easier to eat out without overspending. Here’s how 45 Texas cities ranked overall and by cuisine type.

Suburban cities performed particularly well overall. Sugar Land ranked as the most budget-friendly Texas city for dining out, thanks to strong per-capita options in BBQ and other affordable cuisine categories. New Braunfels, Pasadena, College Station, and Pearland also made it into the top five. These areas tend to offer a better balance of affordability and quality compared to larger metro areas.

In contrast, major cities like Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio landed near the bottom of the rankings. Despite their size and broad restaurant options, these cities tend to have fewer affordable dining choices per capita, making it harder for budget-conscious residents to enjoy a meal out.

Top Cities by Cuisine Type

Looking deeper into the data, several cities stood out for specific types of affordable cuisine.

Wichita Falls topped the list with the most highly rated, affordable restaurants per capita, giving residents a wide variety of top-notch meals at low prices. Pearland ranked first for budget-friendly breakfast and brunch places, while The Woodlands had the best diner ranking.

Sugar Land led the state in affordable BBQ options, with Mesquite and New Braunfels rounding out the top three. New Braunfels also emerged as the go-to spot for affordable Mexican and Mediterranean restaurants.

How Texans Are Prioritizing Dining Out Amid Rising Costs

When budgets are tight, some Texans cut back on eating out, while others are finding ways to prioritize it.

Texans spend an average of $192 per month on dining out. If they need to save money, more people said they would rather skip eating meals out (51%) than adjust their thermostat (37%). However, dining out was really important to other Texans. Twenty percent reported cutting back on grocery spending just to maintain their restaurant routines, while 17% delayed credit card, loan, or utility payments. Another 14% dipped into their savings in order to afford it.

Eating Well Without Overspending in Texas

When it comes to affordable dining in Texas, smaller cities like Sugar Land, New Braunfels, and Wichita Falls shine. Their residents enjoy better access to quality, low-cost meals — something that’s harder to find in larger metro areas. And as Texans continue to budget creatively to keep dining out a part of their lives, knowing where the best deals are can make a big difference. Whether you’re moving to a new city or just planning your next night out, choosing a place where your dollar stretches further can help you savor every bite.

Methodology

This analysis evaluates the relative availability of affordable dining options across major Texas cities, using data from the Yelp API. To account for differences in city size, all restaurant counts were normalised on a per 100,000 residents basis. Restaurants were classified as affordable if they were rated “$” on Yelp. Establishments were further classified as highly rated if they held an average Yelp rating of 4.0 stars or higher.

The final metaranking score is a weighted composite of the following per-capita metrics:

  • Highly rated and affordable restaurants per 100,000 residents (25%) — These restaurants were rated 4.0 stars or higher and priced at $, offering high-quality, low-cost dining options.
  • Affordable BBQ restaurants per 100,000 residents (12.5%)
  • Affordable breakfast and brunch restaurants per 100,000 residents (12.5%)
  • Affordable diners per 100,000 residents (12.5%)
  • Affordable Italian restaurants per 100,000 residents (12.5%)
  • Affordable Mediterranean restaurants per 100,000 residents (12.5%)
  • Affordable Mexican restaurants per 100,000 residents (12.5%)

Limitations: This analysis is limited to restaurants listed on Yelp. The Yelp API limits results to a maximum of 240 establishments per query, meaning counts represent a sample of restaurants surfaced by Yelp rather than a complete census of all establishments within a city. As a result, metrics should be interpreted as relative indicators of availability rather than exact totals. Yelp data is dynamic and may change over time as listings, ratings, and prices are updated.
