The EV Charging Demand Map: Where Future Power Load Is Rising Fastest

Electric vehicles are becoming a bigger part of everyday life, and that shift is putting new pressure on local power grids. As more drivers search for charging stations and more infrastructure comes online, certain cities are seeing demand rise much faster than others. By analyzing charging
stations, search trends, EV ownership, and population data, we ranked 92 major U.S. cities to see where EV charging demand is accelerating the most, and what it could mean for future electricity load.

Methodology

For this study, we analyzed EV charging infrastructure demand across 92 major U.S. cities using a per capita scoring model that weighed four key metrics as follows:

• Charging stations per 100,000 residents (40%):
• EV charger search volume per 100,000 residents (20%)
• Search interest growth from 2022–2025 (20%)
• State EV ownership per 10,000 residents (20%)

Sources:

• Charging station data was sourced from the NREL Alternative Fuel Stations API, which is the same database powering the U.S. Department of Energy’s official
  AFDC Station Locator. The API was queried for all operational, publicly accessible electric charging stations in the United States, returning 77,165 stations and 236,571 ports as
  of January 30, 2026. Stations were then aggregated by city and state

• Search volume data for “EV charger near me” queries by city was collected via Google Trends to measure consumer demand intensity.

• State EV registration data was obtained from the AFD C’s Light-Duty Vehicle Registration Counts by State dataset, which tracks electric vehicle adoption nationwide.

• City and state population figures were sourced from 2024 U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

All metrics were normalized using min-max scaling to a 0–100 scale before applying weights to produce final EV Demand Scores.
