When you think of plants, you might not necessarily think of saving money on your energy bill. However, adding trees and other plants around your home can help reduce your cooling costs during the warmer months! Not sure where to begin? We are here to help!! Read below to see how plants can help you save on your energy bill!
1. Location is Key!
Planting trees to the south of your home can be especially helpful during the spring and summer months. Deciduous (trees that lose their leaves in the winter) can screen up to 90% of the hot sun, while still allowing a breeze to come through.
2. Don’t Forget the Patio
Planting bushes, smaller shrubs and climbing plants around your patio or on a trellis can help keep your outdoor space cool. Incorporating a trellis with climbing vines on your patio or deck can also enable you to enjoy the outdoors, even on the hottest of days! But if you’re outside for long periods of time, be sure to turn off your AC!
As a way to keep the air cool before it reaches your home, plant shrubs, small bushes and ground cover plants around your home. This will also help insulate your home.
4. Going Green
Evergreen trees are a great addition to any yard. They stay green and beautiful all year long, and help stop the winds around your home. It is also good to keep in mind that by planting trees on either side of your home, it can direct winds towards the house, which will assist in keeping your home cool.
