How to Be Energy Efficient on Laundry Day

Energy Saving

As you can imagine, running your washing machine and dryer can use a LOT of energy, but laundry day doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are a few energy-savings tips for you to consider while washing your clothes.

1. Wash with Cold Water

One of the easiest ways to save money when doing laundry? Wash with cold water, or run your machine on the “eco warm” setting. Washing with cold water allows you to avoid using your hot water heater while doing laundry. However, if your clothes have grease stains, we still recommend using hot water. But only when necessary!

2. Only Run Full Loads

Ever just wash a few articles of clothing to avoid having to run a full load? This is probably not the best method if you’re trying to save money! Smaller loads mean more times your machine runs, and that means more money spent!

3. Dry Certain Materials Separately

Did you know that natural fabrics such as cotton and linen dry at a slower rate than synthetic materials? Think about your stretchy athletic pants. When in the dryer, those will dry faster than your cotton towels. When running your dryer, remove heavy items such as towels, sheets, and bath mats to run separately. You’ll likely spend less time drying two loads of laundry, than you would running one with all the items together.

4. Hang Dry

This seems pretty simple, but we are amazed by the number of people who don’t hang their clothes to dry! Take advantage of the warm Texas weather and dry your clothes or heavier items outside. Your wallet will thank you later.

5. Clean Your Filter

We know it’s easy to forget, but try to clean your dryer filter before each load. A clogged filter limits air flow and will slow the drying process.
