When Rising Fuel Costs Push Drivers to the Breaking Point

- Brand loyalty runs deepest with Toyota: 53% of current Toyota drivers would choose Toyota for their EV, 12 percentage points higher than the next-highest brand (Honda).
Methodology
Payless Power surveyed 1,003 Americans to understand at what gas price Americans would seriously consider switching to an electric vehicle. The average age of respondents was 43. The gender breakdown was 55% women, 44% men, and 1% nonbinary or not listed.
Millennials made up the largest share of respondents (50%), followed by Gen X (25%), Gen Z (15%), and baby boomers (11%). Respondents included gas-only vehicle owners (89%), households with both gas and electric vehicles (10%), and EV-only owners (1%). The survey was conducted online in April 2026.
