Buc-ee’s has built a cult following on clean bathrooms, wall-to-wall snacks, and a beaver mascot Texans genuinely love. But underneath the brisket and the merch, these stores are some of the biggest energy users on the highway. The flagship location alone runs more than 75,000 square feet of retail space packed with refrigerated cases, fluorescent lighting, fuel pumps, and the HVAC load required to keep a building that size cool through a Texas summer.
Payless Power modeled the electricity it takes to run Buc-ee’s largest store for a full year, then translated that figure into terms drivers can actually picture: how many homes it could power, how many school buildings it matches, and how it stacks up against the average Texas household.
Key Takeaways
- Buc-ee’s flagship location in Luling, TX, consumes an estimated 4,028 MWh of electricity per year. That’s enough to power 304 average Texas homes for a full year.
- Powering it produces greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 350 gasoline-powered cars driven for a year.
- The store’s annual electricity use is equivalent to that of about 14 average U.S. school buildings.
Inside the Numbers: What It Takes To Power a Flagship Buc-ee’s

- The flagship Buc-ee’s in Luling, TX, burns through the annual electricity of a typical Texas home about every 29 hours.
- Buc-ee’s flagship location consumes an estimated 4,028 MWh of electricity per year, enough to power 304 average Texas homes for a full year.
- Powering it produces greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 350 gasoline-powered cars driven for a year.
- The store’s annual electricity use is about equal to that of 14 average U.S. school buildings and roughly 53% of an average hospital’s yearly use.
Methodology
Electricity use was modeled by applying the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2018 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) Table E4 electricity intensity for “food sales” buildings (181.8 kBtu/sq ft/year, converted to kWh) to Buc-ee’s largest location, in Luling, TX (75,593 sq ft). School and hospital comparisons used the same CBECS Table E4 methodology (32.1 and 98.3 kBtu/sq ft/year, respectively) applied to the national average floorspace for “education” and “inpatient health care” building types.
The Texas home comparison uses EIA Texas residential sector data (13,260 kWh/year per average household) from 2025. CO2-equivalent figures use EIA’s Texas grid emissions factor (823 lbs CO2/MWh) and the EPA’s standard passenger-vehicle emissions factor (4.29 metric tons CO2e/vehicle/year).
All figures are modeled from U.S. EIA building-energy benchmarks (CBECS 2018) applied to Buc-ee’s real, reported floor space, not estimates from the company itself. Estimates reflect the building’s core operations only; fuel dispensers and EV charging infrastructure are excluded due to insufficient reliable utilization data. Actual consumption will vary based on real-world factors such as weather, staffing, foot traffic, and equipment efficiency, and should be interpreted as a modeled approximation rather than a metered figure.
