Each city in this study excels or struggles in different ways. Here’s how the top contenders and bottom performers stack up across our six core categories.

Stockton is a strong overall performer. It also ranked No. 1 in immersive art and scenic night views per capita. It also boasts the second-highest Yelp ratings in the country for light-related attractions at 4.13 stars, showing that residents truly appreciate their local experiences.

Anaheim leads the country in light show venues per capita and holds second place in both immersive art and night views. This Californian city’s all-around consistency makes it a go-to destination for those seeking a vibrant nighttime itinerary.

Meanwhile, Laredo, Texas, found itself at the bottom of the list, ranking last in four of six metrics. With an average Yelp rating of just 1.9 stars, it highlights how limited or poorly rated offerings can significantly impact a city’s brightness appeal.

Reno, Nevada, didn’t dominate in venues or ratings, but it stood out for its intense curiosity. With over 2,200 light festival searches per capita, Reno topped the charts in public interest, a sign that residents are eager for more ways to enjoy the light at night.

Methodology

To determine the brightest cities in America, we analyzed data reflecting both public interest in light-based experiences and the availability and quality of those experiences across 99 US cities. These cities were selected based on population size and data availability, and the list is not comprehensive of all US cities. We used the following three weighted metrics to calculate each city’s Brightness Score:

• Supply of light-based venues per capita. We scraped Yelp using the keywords “light show,” “immersive art,” and “night view.” For each city, we calculated the number of matching businesses per capita. These were not limited to official Yelp categories but were instead derived from keyword matches in business listings and reviews. (60%)
• Public interest in light experiences. We collected Google search volume data for “light festival” and “light show” on a per capita basis to reflect demand and curiosity about light-based experiences in each city. (30%)
• Quality of available experiences. We used the average star rating for the Yelp venues returned by keyword to assess the quality of each city’s light-related attractions. (10%)

Limitations

• The dataset covers 98 US cities, not all, and should be viewed as a representative rather than an exhaustive ranking.
• Yelp keyword matches may include businesses not exclusively focused on light-based experiences and may exclude relevant ones based on phrasing.
