Athletic Energy: Could Pro Athletes Power Your Home?

Have you ever wondered how much energy professional athletes expend in a single season? Based on our recent study, athletes can generate enough energy to power a refrigerator for months or drive an electric car thousands of miles. This article examines the incredible physical demands on iconic players in major sports leagues and the staggering output their bodies deliver.

This study compares the output of top athletes like Shohei Ohtani, LeBron James, and Lionel Messi using estimates based on energy expenditure during regular seasons. It examines their energy use in relatable terms, such as household electricity, transportation, and other everyday activities. You’re about to gain a new appreciation for the unparalleled physical effort required in professional sports.

Key Takeaways

  • MLB stars outpace all other leagues in collective energy exertion.
  • Shohei Ohtani exerts enough energy in the regular season to power a home for an estimated 17 days.
  • Lebron James exerts enough energy in the regular season to mine an estimated 0.25 bitcoins.
  • Travis Kelce exerts enough energy in the regular season to power an EV for an estimated 404.8 miles.
  • Connor McDavid exerts enough energy in the regular season to power a refrigerator for an estimated 6 months.
  • Lionel Messi exerts enough energy in the regular season to brew an estimated 76 cups of coffee.
  • Jon Jones exerts enough energy through a two-fight year to run an estimated 118 loads of laundry.

Energy Exertion by Professional Athletes Across Sports

Athletes across different leagues demonstrate remarkable energy output during their regular seasons. This section explores the estimated energy exertion of some of the most iconic players in their respective sports.

Made with Flourish

Shohei Ohtani generated an estimated 494.4 kWh of energy during a full regular season. Jon Jones followed closely with 471.4 kWh of energy exerted in a two-fight year. LeBron James generated 382 kWh through his regular season performance.

Connor McDavid contributed 265.5 kWh of energy over the course of a hockey season, while Patrick Mahomes generated 121.7 kWh during the NFL season. Lionel Messi completed the list, with an estimated 95 kWh of energy exerted during an MLS season.

What Athletes’ Energy Exertion Could Power

Professional athletes are known for pushing their physical limits, but what if the energy they exert could power household appliances, cars, or even Bitcoin? This section examines how the energy output of stars in MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, MLS, and UFC could be put to use if we had the tools.

Made with Flourish

MLB players led in collective energy output, with enough energy exerted during a regular season to power a home for an estimated 338 days. Shohei Ohtani alone generated sufficient energy to power a home for 17 days. In the NFL, stars exerted enough energy to drive an electric vehicle an estimated 7,409 miles, with Travis Kelce contributing energy sufficient for 404.8 miles.

Mining Bitcoin is extremely energy-intensive — mining just one Bitcoin can require hundreds of thousands of kWh of electricity, depending on the mining hardware and efficiency. Based on our estimates, NBA players collectively generated enough energy to mine the most bitcoins: 4.83 in total, with LeBron James accounting for 0.25 bitcoins.

And what about home appliances? NHL players exerted enough energy to power a refrigerator for nearly 10 years, while Connor McDavid’s output could keep a refrigerator running for six months. MLS players generated energy sufficient to brew an estimated 1,574 cups of coffee, with Lionel Messi contributing enough for 76 cups.

In the UFC, men’s champions exerted enough energy over two fights to run 763 loads of laundry, while Jon Jones generated energy for 118 loads.

The Incredible Energy of Sports Superstars

The energy exerted by professional athletes exemplifies the extraordinary physical demands of their sports. MLB players outpaced other leagues collectively, potentially being able to power the most homes, mine the most Bitcoin, and brew the most coffee. The next time you marvel at a game-winning play or an awe-inspiring performance, consider the unseen energy fueling those moments — both on and off the field.

Methodology

For this study, we calculated the estimated energy exertion of 20 superstar athletes from each league: the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, NHL, and UFC (all male champions), to see what they generate and what that could power. For each athlete, we calculated their energy expenditure in a game (based on their playing time), training, and recovery throughout the season. For UFC fighters, we performed estimates based on a two-fight year. All calculations are estimations based on these factors.
