The heat index and grocery prices weren’t the only things on the rise in Texas this summer. Texas also saw an increase in electricity usage and, with it, increased electricity rates, with some residents’ bills being as high as $500 a month. Electricity rates are up as high as 40% since 2020, with the average per kilowatt-hour rate amounting to $0.1611 across Texas in 2026 (as opposed to $0.115 in 2020), causing many Texans to wonder whether the cost of getting relief from the heat is worth the price. For Texans with heat sensitivities especially, this poses a significant risk to their health and safety.
Unaffordable energy bills have strained Texans’ wallets, which has led to Texas’s ranking highest in the nation for the number of energy disconnections due to missed payments. Although programs like the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) are available to provide aid to eligible households, less than 3% of Texans received assistance through the program in 2024. LIHEAP also continues to face federal defunding propositions from the Oval Office. Though unsuccessful so far, the repeated defunding attempts have increased concern from households in need of LIHEAP’s support to meet outstanding energy demands across the state.
