Missouri City, Texas, located twenty miles southwest of downtown Houston, traces its origins to 1890 when real estate investors R. M. Cash and L. E. Luckle purchased four square miles of land and named it Missouri City to attract settlers from St. Louis, Missouri. They advertised it as a land of “genial sunshine and eternal summer,” hoping they would buy and develop there.
The town officially registered in Texas in 1894, witnessing early growth with homes, a schoolhouse, and a post office. Access to railroads in the early 1900s opened markets for farmers and ranchers, and the discovery of oil in nearby Blue Ridge in 1919 brought economic opportunities. After a salt mine opened, natural gas was discovered. In 1926, Missouri City became the county’s first town to use natural gas.
