How to Identify the Right Generator for Your Home

Hopefully you never need to use your generator, but in the event that you do, you might as well make the most efficient use of one. But, generally if you choose the more efficient option, you also sacrifice some convenience…more on that below.

First, Choose Between a Portable or a Standby Generator

Standby generators are the ones that get installed permanently on a concrete pad and connect to your natural gas line or a propane tank. The advantages of them are that they:

  • Are quieter than portables
  • Are harder to steal
  • Don’t need to be filled with a fuel source which may be scarce
  • Act as a nice bonus for people looking to purchase your home
  • Kick in automatically
  • Have an unlimited fuel supply

Portable generators, on the other hand, offer their own unique set of benefits:

  • They’re portable and can be put away if you don’t want them out year-round, or they can be moved to the area where you need power
  • They cost less upfront to purchase, and are also inexpensive to install
  • If you purchase a portable diesel generator, they require less maintenance than gas generators
  • They’re relatively simple to operate

Efficiency and Energy Savings Depend on How You Use Each Type of Generator

If you’re using a generator, odds are you have limited access to the fuel source (diesel, propane, gas etc.). So what you really want to be sure of in regards to efficiency is purchasing the generator that runs the bare essentials. If you’re not careful, you can easily use 100 gallons of fuel within 3-4 days (although it’s unlikely you’d ever be without electrical power that long).

If you want to keep most of your typical comforts running, you’ll want to go with a standby generator, but that will hamper your efficiency. Because portables generally have a lower overall capacity for power, you’ll be running fewer things around the house and will have greater fuel efficiency.

To choose the right power level for the generator for your home, take a look at this table of how many watts these common electronic devices and household appliances use:

  • Microwave:  Up to 1,200
  • Refrigerator Up to 1,200
  • Freezer:  Up to 1,200
  • Washing Machine:  Up to 1,200
  • Sump Pump:  Up to 800
  • Television:  Up to 300
  • Laptop computer:  Up to 250
  • 10,000 BTU AC System:  Up to 1,500

Armed with this guide, you now know how to choose the right type and most efficient kind of generator for your home.
