Super Bowl LII has come and gone, bringing with it the first ever Super Bowl win for the Philadelphia Eagles. While Philadelphia celebrates for the next few weeks, the rest of the nation will be talking about the Super Bowl commercials. Here are our five favorite commercials from last night’s big game.
1. Tide – “It’s A Tide Ad”
Every ad was a Tide ad during Super Bowl LII. Stranger Things star, David Harbour, appeared in four different spots throughout the game that aimed to convince users that the commercials were for other products typically seen on Super Bowl Sunday, including cars, beer, soda, insurance and even pharmaceuticals. The setup for the commercial series began with a 45-second spot in the first quarter, and was followed by a 15-second spot in the second, third and fourth quarters. What makes each of the ads a Tide ad? The lack of stains on the clothing. Here’s the full compilation:
2. Budweiser – “Stand By You”
Instead of showing Americans how great of a beer Budweiser is, the iconic beer brand and perennial Super Bowl advertiser took a different approach this year. Over the past year, natural disasters like Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, as well as the wildfires in California, left lots of Americans displaced and without clean water. In response, Anheuser-Busch’s Cartersville, Georgia facility switched into its emergency water mode, canning water instead of beer and transporting the clean water to affected areas. In total, the company provided over 3 million cans of clean water during these emergencies. If that isn’t cool enough, Budweiser and Anheuser-Busch opted to use real employees in the commercial rather than actors to give viewers a glimpse into the lives of their team.
3. Doritos Blaze & Mountain Dew Ice – “Tongue Twisters”
The combination of fire and ice took center stage during a combined commercial from Doritos and Mountain Dew. The beginning of the ad featured Game Of Thrones star, Peter Dinklage, rapping to Busta Rhymes’ verse from “Look at Me Now” while promoting Doritos Blaze. Dinklage’s verse was followed with a response from Morgan Freeman and Missy Elliot, who perform one of Elliot’s most popular tunes, “Get Ur Freak On”. Check out the hilarious hijinx below.
4. Amazon – “Alexa Loses Her Voice”
If Alexa were a person, what would happen if she got sick? Amazon showed viewers what that could look like during this year’s Super Bowl. The spot features a number of celebrities who might be asked to fill in if Alexa were to fall ill, including celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, rapper Cardi B, actress Rebel Wilson and actor Anthony Hopkins. The spot won USA Today’s Ad Meter, which ranks commercials based on number of viewer votes. Check out below to see the winning commercial.
5. Jeep – “Anti-Manifesto”
Car commercials are notorious for making commercials that don’t really have to do with cars. This year, Jeep took advantage of that stereotype in a classic show versus tell. Rather than make lofty claims about human nature, pontificate about lifestyles or insinuate that a car will change your life, Jeep showed their Wrangler doing exactly what a Wrangler is made to do – drive through water and climb up rocky inclines.
