Do you ever turn your computer off at the end of the day? Do you even consider the fact that your computer is an energy consumer, especially when left on for days on end? We use a lot of energy each day to power our computers and laptops. It’s the little steps we can take to reduce our computer-based energy consumption, without reducing the time you spend online!
1. Turn Off Your Computer When You Aren’t Using It
This is more than just at the end of the work day. If you’re going out for a long lunch or know you won’t be on your computer for a few hours, it’s probably in your best interest to power down. Turns out, it doesn’t take more energy to turn on a computer than to keep it running throughout the day. If anything, turn off your computer at the end of the day.
2. Skip the Screen Saver!
Contrary to popular belief, by displaying your favorite moving screen saver, you’re actually not putting your computer into ‘sleep’ mode. This will keep your computer in constant use. If you’re not going to power down, be sure to put your computer on sleep mode. Along with this, set your computer to go into sleep mode after 5-10 minutes of inactivity.
3. Use Your Laptop
Laptops use less energy than desktop computers, so if you have the option of using one or the other, stick with the laptop.
4. Put Your Charger on A Timer
If you’re using a laptop over a desktop computer, put your charger on a timer. Outlet timers make sure devices only come on for a portion of the day when they are needed. Plus, leaving the charger in your laptop degrades your battery over time.
