Although the rain has stopped and emergency responses are complete, Houston’s road to recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey is far from over. Hundreds of organizations have mobilized to help Harvey all kinds of Harvey victims. Here are five places victims can get help and other community members can go to help.
With lots of people displaced from their homes, Airbnb is working with host families in Texas to provide shelter for hurricane victims and relief workers at no cost. So far, over 850 families have opened their homes to those in need. Visit Airbnb’s Hurricane Harvey website to find or offer shelter.
- American Red Cross
The American Red Cross has deployed relief workers from all over the state (and even Mexico) to the Houston area since Hurricane Harvey hit. Those looking to help can sign up to volunteer or donate directly to the Red Cross. The organization has a robust online resource center for those seeking help, including a shelter locator and recovery guide.
- Feeding Texas
While food banks in Houston are in need of food for obvious reasons, surrounding, lesser-affected areas are in need of donations as well as they manage the influx of evacuees from the city. To find a food bank in your area, check out this comprehensive list from the Houston Press.
- Salvation Army
So far, the Salvation Army has provided over 430,000 meals in response to Hurricane Harvey, and has sheltered nearly 3,000 victims. Additionally, Salvation Army is continually providing updates on recovery efforts. To help Salvation Army continue their work, you can donate on Salvation Army’s designated Hurricane Harvey and Irma website.
- The SPCA of Texas
With people as a first priority, during emergencies, pets can sometimes be forgotten. There are tons of animals who were uprooted by Hurricane Harvey, and The SPCA of Texas and Austin Pets Alive! are working tirelessly to care for the inflow of animals. To help, you can donate money or supplies, volunteer at a shelter, or sign up to foster pets as these organizations work to reunite these pets their families.
To locate a missing pet, contact the SPCA. Hurricane Harvey specific Facebook pages have also been created and are updated frequently with photos and information regarding found pets.
