Five Ways to Save on Holiday Shopping

Black Friday and Small Business Saturday have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean holiday savings are over. Cyber Monday is November 27 and is a great chance to snag deals on gifts for all the people on your list. But, even if you missed all of the deal days, don’t worry. Check out the tips below to help you save this season.

Make a budget

Creating a budget is an easy way to relieve some of the stress of holiday shopping. Think realistically about how much your family can afford to spend on gifts for the year and compare that to the list of the people you typically exchange gifts with. Divide up the gift budget and set firm amounts for each family member or friend you are buying for. If it feels like there still isn’t enough cash to go around, revisit your list and decide who on the list would appreciate a handmade gift.

Go handmade

It is true that some handmade gifts require expensive trips to the craft store. However, there are plenty of handmade gifts you can make for under $10. If you are making crafts, compare the price of materials online before making a trip to a fancy craft store. Chances are, big retailers like Walmart and Target have similar items for a lower cost. If you’re making baked goods, consider buying baking supplies in bulk to save on overall cost. Don’t have time or materials to spend making custom ornaments or cookies? A framed picture and a handwritten note make an awesome gift, and can cost less than $5.

Buy online

Going to the mall or other shopping center during the holidays can be a disaster for your wallet, especially if you don’t have a clear idea of what you need to buy. Every store you walk past will have holiday sales going on, which can lead you to buy items because they are cheap or on sale instead of specifically buying the gifts that you need or want to buy. The best strategy is to spend time looking at your list and brainstorming a few ideas for each person within the price range you set and go online to purchase those specific items. That way, you can compare the item’s price at multiple stores without leaving your couch to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Also, most stores offer in-store pick up, so you can avoid any extra shipping fees while simultaneously avoid shopping for more than you need.

Read your junk mail

The average American adult receives 560 pieces of junk mail per year, according to the City of Dallas. Mail during the holidays can pick up with friends and family sending cards and gifts, and with all the holiday craziness it can be tempting to just trash all the junk mail you receive. However, coupon packs and flyers can be great ways to find savings during the holidays. Even if you don’t get coupons for gift shopping, you can often find savings on groceries and other everyday costs, which will help alleviate the additional financial burden of holiday shopping. Just be careful not to fall into the trap of buying something you don’t really need just because it is on sale.

Look for coupons

While retailers run their own specials and discounts during the holiday season, manufacturers sometimes offer extra savings on their specific products. Before you buy items through a retailer or department store, check the manufacturer’s website to see if they are offering any coupons for the specific product you are shopping for. It is possible that they may be offering the product for less on their website as well. Consider checking sites like to find coupons from across the web. There are also services, like, that provide extra savings on certain websites and will give you money back for the products you buy through their service. If you do find coupons or use extra services, be sure to read the fine print to find out if it can be combined with other offers or discounts.
