Summer is here!! And it’s certainly going to be a hot one in Texas. Hot summers lead to more A/C use, which will lead to higher energy bills. Here are 5 simple hacks to help reduce your energy bill, all while allowing you to enjoy the summer sunshine!
1. Reconsider Your Refrigerator Temperature
Want your fridge to run efficiently this summer? Readjust the temperature settings! A fridge with a temperature under 37 degrees Fahrenheit, and a freezer under 0 degrees can cause your appliance to run more than necessary. Keep the temperatures at 37 and 0 for maximum efficiency.
2. Run Your Dishwasher in the Evening
Avoid using your larger appliances like your dishwasher or washing machine during “peak” energy demand hours. Try to run your dishwasher in the off hours between 7pm and 10am.
Avoid “Standby Power”
Unplug your appliances when they are not in use. This is especially important when you are going away on vacation. Think TVs, toasters, coffee machines, blenders, etc. Unplug to keep your bills low!
3. Close the Blinds
Use your blinds to your advantage! Have rooms in your home that aren’t used every day? Keep the blinds in those rooms closed during the hot days of summer. Also, close all the blinds in your home when you leave for vacation.
4. Use Fans Wisely
Fans just cool the people (or pets) inside the room by circulating air, they do not actually cool the room. This is why it’s so important to turn fans off when you exit a room. Likewise, turn on the bathroom and oven fans to remove excess moisture in those rooms.
